I am currently engaged in a project to prepare a programme of measures for the Drini-Buna and Semani River Basins in Albania.
This is such an interesting project as Albania's energy is currently mostly (95+%) obtained by hydropower, hence the need for the designation of a programme of cost-effective measures to maintain both water quality and quantity. The project also focuses on strengthening institutions responsible for water management in line with the principles of IWRM and the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive
I will aim to introduce the most important element for the foundation of climate change resilient investments and flood management, i.e. a river basin hydrological model (HYSIM-CC) to determine the availabiliy of waters for hydropower and the potential for flooding or droughts in both River Basins up until 2050. The model, which was created by Ronald Manley, can be viewed on our website for climate change information.
